Background and History of Ubuntu Deaf Vanguard.

The Ubuntu Deaf Vanguard (UDV) is a Deaf-led, Community-Driven Public Benefit Organization (PBO) dedicated to transforming the lives of Deaf youth and their families across Kenya and beyond.
Founded in 2020 by a Deaf youth for the Deaf community, UDV was officially registered as a Community-Based Organization in Kibera, Nairobi in 2021, and transitioned into a Public Benefit Organization in August 2025.

Born during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic on 21st October 2020, UDV emerged as a response to the deep economic and social crises faced by Deaf youth and adults—joblessness, lack of income, and exclusion from safety nets. Yet beyond economic hardship, a greater injustice persisted: language exclusion. Despite Kenyan Sign Language (KSL) being recognized in the 2010 Constitution as the third national language, it remains absent in most homes, schools, and communities.
This silence isolates Deaf youth from their families and society.
Ubuntu Deaf Vanguard was founded to break that silence, challenge exploitation, and build a Deaf-centered, community-rooted movement where Deaf youth and their families thrive—not just survive.

Our Core Beliefs

Brilliance and resilience of Deaf youth: We believe their future is bright and full of possibilities.
